The Childfaiar Company produces child pushchairs that have been providing by three plants
which are shipped to four different distribution centres. The plant number 1, 2, and 3 produce 12,
17 and 11 shipments every month respectively. The entire distribution centre needs ten purchases
every month. The distance to the respective distribution centres from each plant is shown below:
The cost of cargo is $85 plus 55 cents mile for each shipment. How much should be shipped to
each distribution centre from all the plants to minimize the total cost of shipping?
The above condition can be described as a transportation problem. We can determine the
optimum amount of shipments from each plant to each distribution centre using the Solver tool
in Microsoft Excel.
Actually, this is the linear exercise in programming. Three components were involved in the
whole direct programming exercise:
In the form that is provided in Sheet 1 of the attached excel file, the data is tabulated. The
selected variables are the ideal combination of shipments to each distribution centre from the
factory. The cost of each plant to the different distribution centres is given as per shipping.
