  • First, clarify the issue, and be sure to understand what is at stake.
  • Second, view issue data and ask questions.
  • Third, formulate a hypothesis which is a possible cause of the problem.
  • Fourth, test the hypothesis by implementing a solution that solves the cause of the problem.

Other types of reasonings

A Syllogism is a general form of deductive reasoning that consists of a set of premises followed by a concluding statement. The first premise is a conditional statement, and the second premise is another conditional statement that connects to the conclusion of the first premise. And the summary statement ends by connecting the first part of the first premise with the second part of the second premise.

  • Those numbers divisible by 2 are multiples of the number 2.
  • All multiples of the number 2 are even numbers.
  • Numbers divisible by two are all even.

Modus Ponens

This type of deductive reasoning may also be referred to as a confirmation of antecedents because the first statement is usually conditional. And the second statement only confirms the first part of the previous statement. Let us look at the example below to understand this concept of modus ponens.

  • If a number between 99 and 999 is a three-digit number.
  • The number N is a number between 299 and 399.
  • Hence the number N is a three-digit number.

Deductive Reasoning vs Inductive Reasoning

Inductive reasoning is another type of reasoning used at work. This form of reasoning is the opposite of deductive reasoning and occurs when broad generalisations are made based on specific events or facts. The following is an example of inductive reasoning: A lawyer analyses the various strategies used by other lawyers in cases similar to the lawyer's current case.
